Twelve scenes synthesised live in your browser and rendered as a volumetric WebGL scene that moves with the sound: six natural environments — ocean swell, forest rain, dawn chorus, distant thunder, night crickets, deep drone — and six emotional states built from the acoustic markers of affect: elation, fury, sorrow, leaden low mood, mania and serenity.
How to run it
- 1.Pick a scene, then press Start sound (headphones or speakers, low volume first).
- 2.Switch between Sound-reactive and Ambient motion to see how much of the movement the audio is driving.
- 3.Change scenes while it plays — the synthesis and the visual field both swap in real time.
- 4.Compare the emotional states in pairs: Elation against Mania (same arousal, different predictability), Sorrow against Leaden (same low arousal, different valence).

Why this scene sounds the way it does
Surf is close to pink noise: energy spread smoothly across the spectrum with no sudden onsets. Because nothing in it is informative, the auditory system has little to orient toward, and slow amplitude cycles near the pace of relaxed breathing tend to accompany reduced physiological arousal.
How this demonstration works
Nothing is streamed or downloaded. Each scene is generated on the fly from Web Audio primitives: looped noise buffers shaped by biquad filters and low-frequency oscillators for the beds, and scheduled oscillator and noise bursts for droplets, birdsong, thunder and cricket pulses. A 256-point FFT analyser feeds broadband and low-band energy into a WebGL fragment shader that raymarches an animated fractal-noise volume, so the imagery is a direct function of the audio rather than a pre-rendered video. Audio only starts inside your click, and the AudioContext is closed when you leave.
What the science says
Natural soundscapes differ in ways the auditory system treats very differently. Broadband, slowly modulated sound (surf, rain) carries almost no information and works mainly as a mask, raising the noise floor so intrusive transients no longer capture attention. Structured or sudden sound (birdsong, thunder) does the opposite: it recruits the orienting response. Restorative effects reported for nature sound in the literature are modest and vary a lot between people, and the visuals here are an artistic rendering of the audio spectrum — not a measurement of brain activity, and not brainwave entrainment. The emotional scenes are built from the cues listeners reliably use to judge affect in sound — tempo, major or minor intervals, spectral brightness, attack sharpness, roughness and melodic contour — so they are a demonstration of expressed emotion, not a mood induction or a clinical model of any condition.
