Working Memory Span
Hold a growing sequence in mind and reproduce it. A browser version of the classic span task that illustrates why working memory is described as sharply limited.
How to run it
- 1.Watch the sequence of digits appear one at a time.
- 2.Type the sequence back in the same order.
- 3.Each correct answer adds one item; two consecutive misses end the run.

How this demonstration works
Sequences are generated locally with Math.random and presented on fixed timers that are cleared on unmount. Nothing is transmitted; an optional personal best is stored in your browser's localStorage and can be cleared at any time.
What the science says
Classic estimates put immediate verbal span near seven items, while more recent work on chunk-limited capacity suggests something closer to three to five independent chunks once rehearsal and grouping are controlled. Digit span is also strongly affected by strategy — grouping digits into familiar chunks raises scores without changing underlying capacity.
